A Rally for Trayvon Martin!

trayFebruary 26th marks one year since of the horrible tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s death.

As Tampa Dream Defenders we want to take a stand and let people know that his death marks an injustice we have to fight against!

The Stand Your Ground Law has only served to promote racism by excusing those who believe themselves victims against people of color. This law merely seems to advocate violence if an individual feels threatened. This is obviously present in the ongoing Florida vs Zimmerman case which has NOT created any sort of justice for the killing of an innocent teen. The trial for George Zimmerman is set to begin June10, 2013.
The Stand Your Ground law has negatively impacted our country. In some instances this means an increased murder rate as found in a study led by Texas A&M University.

Nationally there is a call to action on February 26, 2013 and we have decided to hold a rally!

Tampa Dream Defenders will be joining with local allies Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), A.N.G.E.L.S, Inc, Li Fe Malcolm, and UHURU Solidarity Movement. We will be holding a commemorative event for Trayvon Martin and invite everyone who wishes to participate in solidarity.

Let’s get together at Crescent Hill in USF’s Tampa campus to listen to community speakers, powerful singing, and to keep vigil.

Together our message will be: REMEMBER Trayvon Martin! “NO” to Stand Your Ground!

When: Tuesday February 26th, 2013

Where:  Crescent Hill (USF)

Time: 6-8pm
